Woods Unlikely to Shed New Light

Tiger Woods has called a "press conference" on Friday to discuss his golf future. I put the words press conference in quotes because there is likely to be little conferring going on. Just Woods apologizing to his family and fans and yada, yada ,yada....zzzzzzzz. Excuse me for dozing off, but Woods is not likely to say anything we haven't heard already either from statements he has previously released or previous media reports.
Let me save you 5 minutes of your life and tell you what will happen on Friday. First, Woods will appear in front of a small group of "Tiger yes men." He will then read word for word from a prepared document just to keep it as impersonal and insincere as he possibly can. Woods will exit without fielding any questions. Sounds real exciting doesn't it?
Woods will likely never discuss this situation again. Furthermore his agent will make it clear that the media is not welcome to ask Woods about this topic going forward. Any rogue reporter who tries to question Woods about his personal troubles in the future will simply be denied access to press conferences. The sports media will go back to tossing Tiger softballs as they always have.
Woods has always been heavily protected by his entourage and that was before the story of his personal decadence surfaced. The wall of defense should only get higher now. Woods likely feels he owes the public no apology for his personal habits anyway, and I guess he makes a good point. So why waste our time with the same boring , insincere rhetoric we have already heard.

  1. As a recovering -- well, sex addict myself, I find your comments about him not being able to be sincere in his apologies a bit harsh. This is his 2nd step of a 12 step process.

  2. I doubt that he will not take any questions. He will, and they will be "planted" questions, or "allowed" questions to make it look real. This will not ever leave Tiger (look to John Daly), as the Golf Fan is not the typical sports fan. He will be forever haunted by the choices he made, and transgressions. I would take it a step further to also suggest that he will be heckled, and most of what fans he has left will turn on him, and root against him. I don't think anyone out there will be able to move this boulder the size of Mount Everest, as a "loose impediment"!

  3. Dear anonymous, Woods has yet to admit publicly that he has a sex addiction first of all. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt concerning his apologies to his family. I'm sure those were sincere. As far as him addressing the public it seems more out of obligation than true repentance.

  4. He has said from the start he didnt believe any of this was anyone's business except his and his families. Any apology to his fans will not be sincere because he doesnt believe joe public should have ever known about this anyway. I do think the athlete/celebrity's life is intruded into by us and the media to much, but that is the price you pay when the public is responsible for you making 100 million a year

  5. I still havent made my mind up on the sincerity of Tiger's speech. However, I thought what he said was very good. He never blamed anyone but himself for his actions, said that he thought he was above the rules with his fame and money but said he now realizes he has to live by the same rules everyone else has. I dont know, a lot of people thought it was sincere and he was contrite but then a lot thought he wasnt at all. And how about the setup for the press conference, rick reilly said it looked like a magic show! I was expecting Johnny Carson and Ed McM to walk out at any second.

On a completely different note, Lebron and Carmelo's show the other night was great. Lebron with a triple double. He did miss the clutch buzzer beater shot though( i know he slipped i just couldnt resist). Also, I think Carmelo has jumped Dwade as the 3rd best player in the league and i have him as number 2 in the MVP race this season.

  6. I had the privelidge of being at that Cavs/Nuggets game. It was a heck of a performance. You have to be careful though, you take for granted all the things he does and sometimes you don't even realize what he is actually acomplishing. As well as he was playing, I would have never realized he had 15 assist and 12 boards at the time if it was not posted in real time on the scoreboard. Sad part is they would have won if they hadn't missed 18 free throws.

  7. An open suggestion to anyone who will be in attendance when Tiger resumes his career:

How great would it be if, on the first tee of his first tournament back, in the crowd of onlookers there stood a full size blow up doll?!

Now THAT is how you heckle him.
