The Death of the White Running Back

With Heisman Trophy voting season upon us, Stanford University's Toby Gerhart is getting considerable attention and why not? He has amassed over 1700 yards and 26 touchdowns and he is not done yet as the Cardinal have a date in the 2009 Sun Bowl versus the Oklahoma Sooners on Dec. 31st. This got me to thinking, who was the last white back to lead the NFL in rushing? Ready for this? It has been 47 years and counting, when the Green Bay Packers Jim Taylor accomplished the feat. Will Gerhart, if he indeed breaks camp with an NFL team next year, have the ability to break the drought or have the days of white running backs in the NFL long passed us by?

  1. I think many of us never thought we would see a white heavyweight boxing champ again and look at the division now, not only is the champion white but most of the fighters ranked in the top 10 are white. But I am curious when the draft predictions start, how high-up they have him.

  2. While the Quarter Back has consistently been The Great White Devil, the NFL has promoted it's own version of "Affirmative Action" -"Because the negro football league does not want Whites to get the glory and praise for succeding at such a demanding job. Simple as that." A masterful quote- anonymous.
Just think about the falsity that one would purvey by saying, "Run like you stole something", if he was a white man? Seriously what a stupid question!

  4. Maybe the Browns will draft Gerhart as the second-coming of Touchdown Tommy Vardell; who ironically was another white RB from Stanford. I don’t think the white RB has passed anyone by…I believe that if Mike Lanese were given a fair shake at OSU, we would be talking about him, instead of Jim Taylor – or Keith Byars for that matter.
