More Ilgauskus Rumors

On the heels of my Zydrunas Ilgauskus post, new rumors are swirling. The lastest has "Z" along with his $11.5 million expiring contract going to the New Orleans Hornets for 6'9" forward David West. The 29 year old West is averaging 17 points and 7 rebounds for the Hornets and is slated to make $9.1 million this year and $8.3 million next year along with a $7.5 million player option for the 2011-2012 season. New Orleans, it seems, is looking to avoid paying luxary tax by moving West and then offering Ilgauskus a buyout. At that point the Hornets could waive "Z" and after a 30 day period ,he could be re-signed by the Cavaliers. We have a large following down in the Bayou, maybe they can let us know what they are hearing.

  1. The Hornets will get under the salary cap before the deadline. They are currently $500,000 over the cap. I believe the NBA pays the teams around 4.7 million who are under the cap. So this will happen... The Hornets have continously said that the core of CP3, D. West, and E. Okafor will not be traded. West has a great contract (under 10 million) for an All-Star PF. The Hornets will not give him up just for salary cap reasons. They may end up trading him, but it would be to improve the team (for young prospects, 1st round draft pick, etc.). Look for the Hornets to trade one of 3 players for a 2nd round pick to get them under the cap: Sean Marks, Ike Diogu, or Devin Brown (all expiring contracts), with D. Brown being the most likely.

  2. Thanks for the local insight, Cajun. I'm sure we will hear a lot more before the deadline comes and goes. Good luck this weekend against 'Sir Favre'.

  4. Let's not forget there was a long period of time when people wondered if the Saints were still a part of the NFL. For most of us that are not the Yankees, these things go in cycles. Enjoy it while it is here and good luck on Sunday.
