More Of The Same From Favre; Saints Advance

The Saints dream season will continue, as they head to Miami to take on the Colts in Super Bowl XLIV, thanks to an ill advised throw by Brett Favre.

With 19 second remaining, the Vikings needed only a handful of yards to put 13 year veteran kicker Ryan Longwell in position to send them to Miami. Instead, Favre decided to play superman and force a throw back across the field that was intercepted by the Saints Tracy Porter.

In my opinion, it has been plays like that, that have limited Favre to one Super Bowl ring in 19 seasons. Brett is a Hall of Fame QB without question and may be the toughest man on the planet to play the way he has at 40 years old, however, sometimes he simply tries to do too much.

If this was indeed Favre's last game, maybe it is fitting that it ended as it did.

Normally, I tend to disagree with most of what you said, but that is not the case in this instance. However, I must once again criticize at least part of your article. Without question, either you or the high school you attended need some assistance in their grammatical aptitude. The word “without” is what a first grader would call a “compound” word. To write it as “with out” is grammatically incorrect, thereby calling into question all of the other info you have posted.

  2. Doc, thank you. I will correct that right away. Unfortunately, trying to post articles in between trades invloving thousands of dollars can sometimes prove problematic. You exhibit yet another liberal flaw, style over substance. That being said, I will work harder to correct these grammatical flaws in the future.

  3. I hope someone kicks me in the midsection if i ever start correcting another man's grammar. Come on man.

Now, i may be biased, which i think you guys are as well, but i think the only reason the vikings were in the game was bcause of Favre. He threw for 310 yds while taking a Rocky style beating. He kept getting up time after time solidifying him as the toughest qb to ever play the game. He made one bad decision, granted it was at a very bad time, but lets not crucify him over that when he was the reason they were in a position to win. He threw some great passes standing in there knowing he was going to get lit up. Again, i know i am biased, but minus one or two plays i thought he was great last night. Also, i think the Saints had luck on their side last night.

  4. You are correct, one should not correct a "Man's" grammar. I thought that Chris was a female and a housewife no less - seeing as the author has so much time to write. But I must go now, instead of making trades that involve thousands of dollars, I must contact my clients who are in the middle of securing MILLIONS of dollars of life insurance!

    ReplyDelete
  5. Selling life insurance is a lay up compared to what I am trying to do. I will settle for a few less dollars as long as I don't have to hate myself when I get out of bed every morning. I have to go now as well. I have to tend to my ill son, which I have the privilidge of doing seeing I am home doing "nothing".

    ReplyDelete
  6. Anyone who does what I do for a living, with the same kind of passion and integrity I exhibit will NEVER hate themselves in the morning. However, if I were home with an ill child and chose to tend to him or her only after I finished blogging or playing the casino known as the stock market, I may hate myself in the morning.

  7. Favre did not lose that game. The Vikes fumbled 6 times and lost 3 of them. I know Favre got credited with 1 fumble. Anyone who knows football knows that was AP's fault. If AP manages to take that handoff the way he was suppose to, the Vikes score at least a field goal and the game doesn't even got to OT.

Dr O. I went to the same high school as Chris so if I have any errors please feel free to correct them. Also, if you are a Dr., wouldn't that be patients not clients? If they are securing MILLIONS of dollars of life insurance, then you must not be a very good Dr. If you are not a Dr. then why the nickname Dr.?

    ReplyDelete
  8. I did not infer that you hate yourself. I was refering to myself, as I am only concerned about my life and what I do for a living not everybody else's. Now, if we can get back to what this blog was intended for I think everyone will appreciate it.

  10. The Favre apologists are truly a loyal group. The fumble at the goal line was A.P.'s fault. If Favre had fumbled the snap it would have been the centers fault, and if it slipped out of his hands while trying to pass it would have been the ball boys fault for not wiping off the ball good enough. Favre made a major mistake in the last minute with the game on the line- end of story. Why is it so hard to admit that? I suppose that Favre's 347 career INT's were all someone elses fault. If you want the glory you have to take the heat too.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Look folks, this is the bottom line. If the Vikes went on to score people would not be talking about the TE, RB or offensive line Favre would have gotten all the glory, so he must take the blame as well, that's the nature of the beast.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Favre F'd up for not taking the rock himself for ten to fifteen yards, setting up a game winning field goal! Further if only they let Favre call the OT coin flip; I'm sure he would have called tails! (that's his fault too!)
The entire team lost the game as a collective, too many big mistakes from more than one player in this game....

    ReplyDelete
  13. I am not a Favre apologist - honestly I couldn't care less if he played or didn't. But all of us Browns fans have seen too many losses, so I trust we ALL have an appreciation that it is not one play, or one player that causes a loss. Sure, a player can contribute more to a loss than another.

But to that point, the ebb and flow of a game certainly factors in to the equation. How many times in the past have we seen a Browns team make a first down; only to have the play reversed by a holding call, or some other stupid penalty, or better yet, how many times have we seen Braylon drop a ball, only to have the very next play result in an interception?

So then what do we all naturally do? We m-f the QB who threw the int. But we quickly forget that the int never would have occured had we gotten the first down on the previous play. Had there NOT been a holding play, then the first down would have held up. Or had Braylon caught the ball, then we have the first down and the QB is not forced to try and overcome the assinine play of his fellow teammates.

To that I remind everyone; had there not been a 5 yard penalty for too many in the huddle, then who knows what would have happened. They had ran the previous two plays. Odds are, they may have done it a 3rd time.

So this is not to apologize for Favre. Couldn't care less. All I am saying is that there is an ebb and flow that must be looked at. Sure, Favre made a mistake - a big mistake. But in the corse of 140+ plays, no coach, player or educated person would ever say that ONE play cost them the game. And yes, certain plays do have a bigger impact, I understand that. Favre made a big mistake - possibly the biggest of the game. But that is the end of the story only if people realize that ONE play doesn't cost someone the game. I don't care about his 347 int's. I don't care who fumbles the snap. I don't care who won the game (The Brown's didn't play).

This isn't about "glory versus blame" this is about 45 guys on a roster all taking ownership of the outcome. And it's about the viewers understanding that as well.

Now hopefully Chris' son is feeling better and now that the market is closed, hopefully he has dinner prepared for his adoring wife!

  14. Doc, you are correct that it is a team effort, however, in the world in which we live the QB is "the man". If you can tell me all the focus would have been on the team and not on Favre had they won, only then will my arguement be refuted. We both know that is not the way it works fair or not. As Browns fans, we know that Brian Sipe was the focus when he failed to execute "red right 88" in the 1981 playoff versus the Raiders. Most do not talk about the missed field goals and other miscues earlier in the game, only that Sipe had his chance to lead his team to victory and threw a terrible pass as well as failing to see a wide open Reggie Rucker.

    ReplyDelete
  15. It's true that some others on the Vikings could have played better and it's never completely fair to put the blame on one player, but that's life as an NFL QB. But with 4 playoff wins in the last 13 seasons I wonder why Favre's legend has grown so large. I get that he's passed for a million yards and he's going to the Hall of Fame, but his post season record doesn't show anything special. 4 wins in 13 years isn't anything to write home about, and yesterday Favre didn't deliver when it was his chance.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Jeff, evidently the world in which we live the QB in NOT the man; Chris Agresta is! Obviously, posting blogs in between trades involving thousands of dollars, or considering what I do a "lay-up" compared to what he does, or that he doesn't hate himself after waking up in the morning, or the fact he only cares about his life and no one elses, I'd say again, he's the man! It's his world, we're jusy living in it.

Though I must add that doing what I do, primarily selling life insurance - to assure that one's family is properly protected and cared for - is an ok path to follow. Maybe there is something to be said for caring about others as you care about yourself or your own family...just a thought.

  17. Thanks for making that sacrifice for humanity Doc. I'm sure you reflect upon that while driving from your Beachwood home, to your Salon in the comfort of your BMW. It was you who chose to attack my life style. This blog was intended to talk about what is happening in the world of sports, not argue grammer or lauch personal attacks on ones way of life. I concede, you are a better man than I. I hope you do not "care for others" in the same manner that you did today when you decide to insult me without (one word) provication. By the way, let me know when you drop those commissions from your salary structure for the greater good of society.

Understand that the first comment I provide noted that I did in fact AGREE with your commentary. However, I suggested that you correct your grammar; if one were to constantly read something that was grammatically incorrect time and time again, then it would eventually diminish the quality of their comments (see Mike Trivisono for an example).

So when I suggested that you improve it, you imediately reverted to throwing in my face what you do for a living; once you went there, it bacame open season. So to imply that my comments were without provication...don't see it.

FYI - I don't drop commisions, I simply donate more. And by the way, here's the problem with the internet; because someone writes something and posts it, many people believe it to be true.

My point?....I DO NOT drive a BMW.

  20. Doc, let's be honest. You opened season several times in earlier post, which I ignored until now. My friends have also caught errors, grammatical or otherwise, and alerted me of them privately thru e-mail not publicly like you have chosen to do. Furthermore, it was in comment #16 that you tried to impune my integrity and that was uncalled for.

Sorry for insulting you in my last post. For the record Dr.O drives a MERCEDES not a BMW. Lastly, if you don't enjoy reading my poorly conjugated post, don't read them.

I am guessing you meant "impugn" not "impune" as there is no spelling for "impune". (You mentioned in your response to my first post that you were going to try and do better to correct grammatical flaws in the future?)

Impugn: im·pugned, im·pugn·ing, im·pugns. To attack as false or questionable; challenge in argument: impugn a political opponent's record. ...

That being said, I don't see how refering to you as "The Man", saying "it's your world, we're just living in it" is a false fact.

Obviously, you have NO problem with disseminating information publicly. I questioned your grammar in an open forum - guilty as charged. However, I never mentioned the car you drive.

    ReplyDelete
  23. You inferred I cared for no one other than myself, I take that as a personal attack. The car one drives is a public matter not needing dissemination seeing you drive it on the open highway and is registered with DMV , by the way, you spelled "became wrong" and that isn't even a compound word. What grade do we learn that in? For the record, I own only one car right now and it is a Saturn Vue. I consider this conversation over.

posted by Chris Agresta on 1/25/2010

So based on your own words, I don't find it too much of a reach to infer that you only care about yourself. Yes, I mistakenly wrote "bacame" instead of "became". This is more in the form of a typo - sort of if I were to write "thw" instead of "the". But impugn was completely misssssspellllled.

It appears that as of now, the only thing we have in common is the school system from which we both graduated.

    Converation alive and well.

  27. Once again, the context of that post was misinterpreted by you. You are obvoiusly carrying around hostlities, otherwise you would keep your commentary directed toward the subject at hand, sports. I guess I will have to be more clear since you could not read between the lines when I was trying to be polite. The quote from 1/25/2010 should have read; mind your own business! If calling me a "female" and a "housewife" as well as correcting my grammer make you feel better about your manhood, so be it. The sad part about this is, that I offered you the opportunity to post articles as an author on our site and rather than politely declining, you decided to respond by attack my intelligence while trying to prove yours.

  28. I don't understand how it ever became an issue what Chris does for a living or what business it is of anyone on this blog sight. Everyone is entitled to make their living as they see fit , and it is not subject to anyone else's approval. Furthermore the readers have had it with the grammar lessons. This was intended to be a sports blog and I wish it would be kept as such. Lets stop insinuating that somehow a person working out of their home is less of a man or citizen than someone who does not. I thought we were are all intelligent enough to have a spirited sports debate without attacking one anothers personal character. Let's hope we can get back to that format.

I don't believe anyone ever drew into question what one person does to make a living. No one was being judgmental at all. Personally, I couldn’t careless how one provides for the welfare of their family. So it is mystifying how you have interpreted that I am somehow disapproving of how Chris, or anyone, makes a living? That he is “less a man or citizen” – where that ever came from is also confusing. Are you kidding me?! The fact that Chris has the time to write is a benefit for him – the “housewife” jab was done simply because his name, when shortened, could be meant to represent Christina or Christopher – a simple joke that obviously neither you nor he got.

I guess this entire commentary spiraled out of control, when, upon my correcting the grammar of one of the author’s original posts, I added some lighthearted banter not only letting the author know that while we finally agreed on an issue, but that his grammar was a bit off; I even took a shot at his school – of which the author knows full and well was the same school from which I too graduated high school.

AG, I would have thought that you of all people, being the most adept at the use of the English language, could appreciate my corrections. As we have often both berated talk show host’s in this city for their egregiously poor use of the English language – thereby reducing the effectiveness of their opinions.

That aside, it was clear that a backhanded and condescending remark directed towards me was phrased “in the middle of transactions involving thousands of dollars”. It was as if Chris was saying that I shouldn’t be critical of his grammar, but instead I should be willing to genuflect at what he was doing when he wasn’t posting. Again, let the record show that most people who work out of the home take some level of ribbing from their buddies for the mere fact that they are fortunate enough to be at home; second, I never criticized or implied what Chris did was of any lesser consequence of anyone else, nor did I lead in with what I do or don’t drive, nor the level of transactions I conduct.

Moreover, for what it’s worth, insinuating that one would “hate themselves in the morning” if they had to do what I do for a living – that my friends is probably the most heinous comment of all.

So with that, I am off to watch American Idol. Maybe with all of Chris’ free time, he was able to practice his singing – maybe I can see him on the show with a new rendition of “Pants on the Ground!”

And to those who want to discuss sports – here goes:

1] Cavaliers are the best team in the league and the conversation regarding them will pick up in June when they are securing their TITLE.

2] The Browns conversation will pick up in the middle of April.

3] Indians have zero going on worth discussing. Their conversation will begin in 2012
4] Regarding golf, Tiger is in rehab, so we will probably have to wait a few weeks until we find out who he was banging at the facility.

For what it's worth, I never declined the invite to publish; I just couldn't figure out how to log on to establish the ability to do so. In the interim, I saw that there were a few posts that piqued my interest and decided to weigh in.

And you needn't be so sensitive. Correcting one's grammar is not an attack at your intelligence.

So while we may disagree on our opinions, I never implied you were stupid or unitelligent, while at the same time attempting to elevate my own status or intellect.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Doc, I will clarify one last thing and this will be done on my end. My initial response to you was not a backhanded attempt to degrade you or anyone else. Right or wrong, I did take offense to your correcting of my grammer and my reply was intended to let you know that I have a high pressure situation here everyday and it is more important for me to monitor my positions not triple check my grammer, as this blog does not help feed my family or pay the mortgage. Again, as a friend, I felt that if you really cared about the success of this blog or my ability to communicate to the readers, you could have contacted me personally and we could have had a constructive conversation. That, I would have appreciated.

    ReplyDelete
  32. UB -
We ALL have high pressure situations regarding our work (yours are more time sensitive I'll grant you that; but they are no more or less pressured that others - trust me on that).

Now, to wrap up the issue at hand here on my end as well - I have but one question (rehtorical), "are you kidding me?". Knowing you over 30+ years, and I bust your balls about the work "without" and you would have suggested and appreciated that I contact you personally, off line, to have a constructive conversation??? You can't be serious. IT'S THE WORD "WITHOUT" FOR CHRISSAKE!!! SO YOU SPELLED IT WRONG, IT WAS FUNNY, PERIOD. Contact you personally to discuss spelling...sorry, that I cannot do. Neither you nor I have the time.

But to contact you personally to make certain that you would select LeBron over anyone in the NBA if you were to start a franchise - that I CAN and DID do.

So while your spelling is off at times, at least your basketball acumen I agree with.

    All the best -

  35. Doc. O, Your references to Chris as a "girl" and a "wife" came across as a personal attack. I can't imagine in what context those comments could be considered a compliment. You have also made mention repeatedly about his perceived abundance of "free time", which seemed to be a back handed jab at the fact that he is at home during the day. I hope you can see how these comments could have been interpreted in an unfriendly manner, and they certainly had nothing to do with the subject matter at hand, which was the NFL playoffs.

    ReplyDelete
  36. AG -
Gotta believe that you are stirring the pot here. Yes, a "girl and wife" comment is less than flattering; a personal attack, though? Come on...what, should I now be considered the 13th highjacker on 9/11? Personal attack??? It's called BUSTING BALLS. Since when did you lose your sense of humor; or better yet, when did you suddenly become repulsed by mine.

I only wish that Matt O. had enough money to be able to afford an internet connection. Maybe then he could weigh in in my defense.

Until then, I guess I will have to go solo like Flavo Flav and debate you and Chris over the word "WITH OUT".

    ReplyDelete
  37. Why is it that your comments are to be taken as humor and mine are assumed to be "backhanded" insults? I think it is obvious to all that you slant the context of all these comments to your liking. It was you that said the problem with the internet is that "because someone writes something and posts it, it assumed to be true". So, we all must conclude, thanks to you own proclamation, your comments were inappropriate. Game, set, match.

    ReplyDelete
  38. UB -

How are you ever going to replace Bill Livingston with this type of summary judgement.

You missed the point entitely. When I wrote "...because someone writes something and posts it, many people believe it to be true" it was meant to imply that the opposite is often the case; that most of what people write is NOT in fact true (witness the BMW reference).

Therefore, one could aptly conclude that EVERYTHING I write is NOT true. But if that is the case, then this is not true, making everything I said prior, true. Gotta love this circular logic.

Speaking of what others write, you scribed "...Again, as a friend, I felt that if you really cared about the success of this blog or my ability to communicate to the readers, you could have contacted me personally and we could have had a constructive conversation."

Let the record show that I called you no less than 5 times today - but there was no answer. Evidently your early post didn't mean too much as your silence spoke volumes. You didn't want my advise OR friendship. Moreover, I even tried today to establish credentials to be a contributor on this site, and it appears that someone has revoked the privildges.

Therefore, based on all of the comments and removal of privlidges, it is evident that you and your brother would prefer I take my keyboard and head elsewhere with my comments. (I even reached out to him a half-dozen times as well and apparently he too went dark)

I guess the only thing I can do is let the "Shoe" know when and where I will relocate. It appears that he was the only one who "got" Dr.O.

In the immortal words of Hal Lebovitz - "See you somewhere, I hope."
